This is how we helped the Guatemalan Returnee association to improve their registration and assistance program.

The challenge & Background context

The Guatemalan Returnees Association (Asociación de Retornados de Guatemala) is a non-governmental organization that provides personalized primary care for returning migrants during and after their arrival—offering vital support through job placement, educational opportunities, technical training, and certifications.

After years of managing user records manually, the association partnered with us to modernize their operations and deliver a more seamless, supportive onboarding experience for individuals embarking on a new beginning.

Research & Problem Definition

Our research focused on understanding the environment where intake happens. Returnees often go through registration during emotionally intense moments, making long, repetitive forms a major source of friction.

At the same time, field staff needed a flexible tool that could operate efficiently on both mobile devices and tablets.

By analyzing the existing data fields, we streamlined the registration architecture—grouping related inputs, enabling auto-population, and designing a touch-optimized UI for multi-device field use. This transformed a tedious registration task into a fast, humane onboarding experience.

Technical Architecture & Key Features

Engineering for Scale & Pandemic Resilience

To solve complex field distribution and data processing during peak pandemic restrictions, we built a resilient Android solution powered by Google Cloud infrastructure.

App Distribution

Leveraged Firebase to bypass traditional deployment friction, enabling instant, secure application distribution and remote updates to field agents during COVID-19 lockdowns.

Analytics & Reporting

Integrated BigQuery to transform raw intake data into automated, high-level administrative reports, giving stakeholders real-time visibility into returnee demographics and operational trends.

Smart Population & Validation

Engineered core taxonomies with pre-filled fields, drastically reducing manual data entry time and intake errors.

Tablet & Mobile Optimization

Designed a fluid, multi-device UI tailored for both smartphones and tablets, ensuring field staff could capture data comfortably in dynamic arrival environments.

UX/UI Strategy & Accessibility Design

Every design choice in the ARG App was guided by a single priority: honoring the human experience at a pivotal moment of transition.

Returning migrants are filling out forms and doing paperwork, often under intense emotional stress. To support them, we created an experience that leads with empathy from the moment they meet the screen.

We selected a serene green tone to bring immediate calm, clarity, and peace to an overwhelming arrival process. Vibrant orange accents were woven in to inspire warmth, confidence, and a sense of forward momentum. For the field agents working alongside them in active, unpredictable environments, we crafted an intuitive, high-visibility interface for phones and tablets. By transforming long, tedious paperwork into a clear, reassuring digital dialogue, the design steps out of the way—allowing returnees to take their first step forward with dignity and hope.

Conclusion

The project streamlined data flow to reduce form completion time for users, significantly improving operational efficiency.

The application was delivered for deployment across both mobile devices and tablets. Select components were engineered to auto-populate, minimizing manual data entry time and friction.
